Abstract: The present paper puts forward a new petal shaped grooved nose of projectile. Experimental study on the penetration of petal shaped grooved nose projectile and ogive nose projectile, based on the experimental method of high velocity impact fired by artillery and the launch technique of subcaliber projectile. The experimental results show that when the two structural projectiles are penetrating the 3 m C80 steel mixed target at a velocity of 1 000 m/s, the petal shaped slotted projectiles have higher section specific kinetic energy than those with pointed oval heads, so the penetration velocities of the head slotted projectiles are increased by 4.49%~11.67%.The head grooving reduces the friction force of concrete fragments on the head of the body, resulting in the mass loss rate of the head grooving structure of the body 2.61%~2.00%, which is lower than that of the pointed oval head structure of the body 3.19%~3.79%.
