Numerical study of sealing groove performance of rubber O ring between spherical moving pairs

Abstract: According to the spherical sealing pair of solid rocket motor swinging nozzle, the sealing performance of spherical sealing ring with rectangular sealing groove, V shaped sealing groove, dovetail sealing groove and rectangular deflection groove was compared by finite element method, and the influence law of pressure and sealing clearance was discussed.The results show that the sealing performance of the rectangular deflection groove is the best, the contact length of the sealing surface increases by 35%, and the maximum stress of the sealing ring decreases by 33% under the same working condition.The sealing performance of the rectangular deflection groove is stable, and the effective contact width of the sealing ring in the groove does not change with the gas pressure. The effective contact width of the sealing ring under the high pressure of 18 MPa is 1.23 times that of the standard rectangular groove, and the maximum stress of the sealing ring is only 93.2% of that of the standard rectangular groove.The sealing gap will increase the extrusion length of the seal ring in the rectangular slot, increase the maximum stress of the seal ring, and increase the risk of seal failure, but the effective contact width of the seal ring in the rectangular deflection slot does not change with the seal gap, and the rectangular deflection shape can effectively reduce the extrusion length of the seal ring, reduce the maximum stress of the seal ring, and improve the reliability of the seal.
