Research progress of erosion on inner bore surface of gun barrel

Abstract: The challenge of extending barrel life has restricted the improvement of the performance and combat effectiveness of guns for a long time. Therefore, extending the lifetime of gun barrels has become an urgent need for modernization and future battlefields. This paper describes the factors that affect the inner bore surface and its development progress in service life. First, this paper briefly introduces the research progress on barrel damage at home and abroad. Then, erosion mechanisms are analyzed, including thermal erosion, chemical erosion, and mechanical erosion. Based on these mechanisms, their control measures such as coating, erosion reducing additive materials, and the material of the rotating band are comprehensively discussed. This study provides references for understanding the current research situation and carrying out research work further on the mechanisms of lifetime.
