A micro shaped ammunition with built in MEMS safety and arming device

Abstract: Focus on the technical requirement of micro ammunition, a micro shaped ammunition with built in MEMS safety and arming device (SAD) is introduced in this paper. The design of overall structure, the design of the MEMS detonator, the design of the MEMS SAD, the design of the micro shaped charge warhead, and the performance test of the micro ammunition are investigated. The test results show that: when the ammunition stays in the safe mode, the double layer barrier of the MEMS SAD will block the barrel. Even triggered by the wrong signal, the explosion energy cannot be transmitted successfully, and the safety of the system can be guaranteed. When the ammunition stays in the arming mode, the double layer barrier will be moved away by the electrical signal, which unblock the barrel. Triggered by the explosion command, the MEMS detonator can transmit the energy to the booster charge. The micro shaped ammunition occupies Φ22 mm×40 mm, 1.4 g charge amount and 20 mm armor steel penetration capability, and can be applied in micro drones, small caliber ammunitions and no (low) recoil ammunitions.
